Mexican Roots, American Soil traces the journey of the author’s family members who fled the battlegrounds of the Mexican Revolution, successfully escaping the firing squads of Pancho Villa and crossing the border in 1916. Thereafter, the story transitions into the author’s autobiography. This is not a dry memoir. Ernie Bringas has been a teacher, a preacher and a rock & roll feature. His life has been exciting and somewhat of a roller coaster ride. Ride with him from the tough streets of Watts in LA to the palm tree-covered streets in Beverly Hills, not to mention the investigative hunt for a serial killer, and much more. Bringas states that he looks more like the Gingerbread Man than the Pillsbury Doughboy. His students say he looks more like Barney Fife. Whatever the case, he is an American through and through. This often-humorous autobiography of a first generational Mexican American illustrates through a real-life example that the “sky’s the limit” for anyone in search of the American Dream. Immigration issues will continue to be front line controversies for years to come. Mexican Roots, American Soil seeks to help Americans recognize that the welcome mat afforded incoming immigrants does not have a one-sided advantage. Immigrants continue to weave their unique threads into the American fabric. Their intellectual, creative, and artistic contributions are the bloodline that keeps our nation from becoming anemic, and stagnant.

I've read a couple of other books by Ernie Bringas. I found this one to be a truly compelling read. In fact, it was on my porch in an Amazon package when I got home from work at 7:15 pm, and I started reading it right away. I didn't put it down until I had finished it at 2am on Tuesday morning! It reads like Professor Bringas is simply talking to you as a friend, telling you stories from his life. And what a life he's had!Bringas is well known as a founding member of the Rip Chords, and one of the primary four people who sang on all the Rip Chords albums and singles. But there is so much more that the author shares with us than the typical tell all from someone who worked with the Wrecking Crew in the L.A. rock recording scene in the 60s.
As a point of reference, I'd known Bishop Maynard Sparks when he was alive, and Bringas' interactions with Bishop Sparks are described entirely in keeping with the kind of man I knew him to be.
I find the author's assertions about what America is and should be to be right on point with my own expectations and experience. While my mother spoke German instead of Spanish before she learned English, the ebb and flow of this book resonated with me. And it is a timely read in 2016 considering the "discussions" about America going on in the sphere of presidential election politics.
I highly recommend it -- especially if you've had any contact with Professor Bringas before as an author, professor, minister, rock star, encyclopedia salesman, or via any of his other adventures.

Great read...arrived prompt
I know this man yet I learn so much more about him. I love this book
An provocative recount of a family making it's way in a new society. From riches to rags, to riches to rags again, and finally, the average American life. Ernie Bringas has some surprising conclusions about how and why they were able to blend the family history with their new homeland and I enjoyed his recounting of personal events. I found it particularly interesting that this is told by a member of the moderately successful singing group of the 60's, The Rip Chords.
